NRW2023: Be a Voice for Generations

National Reconciliation Week is fast approaching, and this year’s theme is “Be a Voice for Generations.” From May 27th to June 3rd, Australians across the country will come together to learn, share, and celebrate our shared histories, cultures, and achievements.

For those who may not be familiar, National Reconciliation Week is an annual event that marks the anniversary of the 1967 referendum and the historic Mabo decision in 1992. It’s a time for all Australians to reflect on our nation’s past, particularly the impact of colonization on Indigenous peoples, and to work towards a future of healing, understanding, and reconciliation.

The theme “Be a Voice for Generations” encourages us to think about the impact our actions and words have on future generations. It’s a reminder that the work of reconciliation is ongoing, and that each of us has a role to play in creating a more just and equitable society.

So, how can you get involved in National Reconciliation Week? There are many ways to participate, no matter where you are in Australia. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Attend an event: Check out the NRW website for a list of events happening in your area, from virtual workshops and webinars to community gatherings and cultural celebrations.
  2. Learn more: Take the time to educate yourself about Australia’s history and the ongoing impact of colonization on Indigenous peoples. There are many resources available online, including books, podcasts, and documentaries.
  3. Start a conversation: Use social media or other platforms to start a conversation about reconciliation with your friends, family, or colleagues. Ask questions, share stories, and listen to different perspectives.
  4. Take action: Think about how you can contribute to reconciliation in your community. This might include supporting Indigenous-led initiatives, advocating for policy change, or volunteering your time and skills.

No matter how you choose to participate, National Reconciliation Week is an opportunity to come together as a nation and commit to a better future for all Australians. Let’s be a voice for generations and work towards a more just, equitable, and reconciled Australia.
